The Shiprock of New Mexico


     Unique Towering structure of The Shiprock is located at the San Juan County, New Mexico, United States about 10.75 miles (17.30 km) southwest of the town of Shiprock. Shinrock is a remnant of volcanic eruption occurred around 30 million years ago during the Oligocene. Shintock was named was named by Anglo settlers, Ship Rock, known as Tse Bitai, or “the winged rockin Navajo. The Winged rock name refers to the legend of the great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present landsmith says that the Shipack was a piece of land that became a bird, carrying the ancestral people of the Navajo on its back Ship Rock, when viewed from certain angles, resembles a large sitting bird with folded wings. Some other myth or legends about shiprock are Bird Monsters lived on the rock and ate humans. The peak is 7,178 above sea level, the main part of the landform is 600 meters high, and 500 meters in diameter. 


    Ship Rock is composed of an unusual, highly potassic magma composition called a “minette”. It is the erosional remnant of the throat of a volcano, Shiprock is sacred to the Navajo people. Hiking and/or climbing on the sacred peak or its surrounding rocks is forbidden. Driving onto the dirt road leading to the formation is prohibited as well. Before 1970, it used to be the great prize among tech climbers to climb on shiptack First Ascent: First ascent in 1939 by David Brower, Raffi Bedayn, Bestor Robinson, and John Dyer.

Shiprock Town which is named after the shiprock formation is a home to the annual Northe Navajo Fair, which takes place in every October. It also hosts the Shiprock Marathon and Relay.
