The Rice Paddy Art of Japan

The Rice Paddy Art is an art originating from Japan, where People plant rice of various types and colors to create a giant pictures in a paddy field. Since 1993, the farmers of the Japanese village of loakadate a village of 8,000 hoping to revitalise its town in the early 90’s, in Aomori, creating elaborate Designs on rice paddy fields, with the paddy as a canvas, the villagers cultivated and used four different types Jof heirloom and modern strains of rice to create a giant picture in the field. For the first nine years, the farmers created a simple picture of Mount lwaki. before going to more complex designs. the artisan-farmers of loakadate recreate classic art pieces in their fields. such as the Mona Lisa and Hokusai Katsushika’s Ukiyo-e, along with historical figures and pop icons like Marilyn Monroe and Napoleon Bonaparte, as well as Japanese warriors, demons and deities.
