Sanbutsu-ji Complete information

  Sanbutsu-ji is a Buddhist temple in the town of Misasa, tottori Prefecture, Japan.

It was founded by the Buddhist ascetic and mystic of the late Asuka Period Monk. En no Gyoja temple was built around the eighth century into the foot of the mountain that

rises 900 meters in sky. The building of Nageiredo is constructed under the cave of hard cliff. a wooden structure balancing almost impossibly on a steep cliff face.


   It was established as practice mountain of Shugendo. In 849, Later, the mountain prospered as a training ground for a faith called Shugendo, rituals are still practiced today.

It’s hard to imagine how this feat was accomplished by builders in that time. Temple has three Buddha Amida, syaka and Dainichi, therefore temple has been Named sanbutsuji temple, means temple of three Buddha. Because its unique structure and historic value, Nageiredo has been designated as national treasure of Japan.

Open: 8:00 to 15:00 closed in Rain and snow.

Important to wear trekking shoes because of hard climbing.
