Krishna’s Butter Ball, Mahabalipuram, India

   Located about 60km south of Chennai, Mahabalipuram is famous For its stone carvings.

Butter Ball is a giant balancing rock, approximately 5 meters in diameter, precariously balancing on a smooth slope, It weighs over 250 tons, Resting at an angle of 45 degrees, ball stands alone on this hill defy all logical explanations, known as Krishna’s butterball. The rock is balanced upon a 4 feet area of the hill. Its simple physics that a structure needs a 250 ton rock has a far-fetched chance of resting on a 4 feet area for such a long period for over 1200 years.Huge rock is quite popular among locals and tourists and great for photographs,

       This rock is bigger and heavier than the monolithic stones of Ollantaytambo, Peru or Machu Picchu. its original Tamil name is “Vaanirai kal” which literally translates to “Stone of The Sky God”. It’s a myth that that the Pallava King tried to remove this rock In 1908 the then Governor of Madras Arthur Lawley decided the boulder to be too dangerous to nearby homes and wanted it removed. Seyen elephants were employed to push the rock. But to everyone’s surprise the rock couldn’t be moved and the task was abandoned. Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World heritage site. Located at a short distance from Krishna’s butterball is the Ganesha Mandapam – a temple that has been carved out a single rock.
